Sports Massage
Sports massage is based on Swedish massage, a technique that uses the application of pressure to manipulate soft tissue. Sports massage incorporates the gliding, kneading, pressure and bending/stretching movements of Swedish massage and adds intensive techniques which are designed to prevent and treat sports injuries.

Sports and remedial massage is good for releasing muscle tension and restoring balance to the musculoskeletal system. It reduces strain and discomfort, relieves pain and facilitates movement whether you are an office or manual worker, and regardless of whether you are an athlete or participate in sport for your own general health and fun. Age and ability do not matter, the treatments will always encourage the body to heal and repair any injuries sustained and help to prevent new injuries.
My treatments are tailored to your needs. A sports massage will normally focus on a particular area of pain or discomfort, here are some of the more common ones:
• Stiff shoulders and neck
• Lower back pain
• Sciatica
• Stiff legs in team players and runners
• Soft tissue rehabilitation after injury
• Work related tension
• Whiplash
• Painful joints
• Stress
• Posture related pain
• Chronic (long term) discomfort

Within these treatments deep tissue massage is quite often applied to one or more more areas of the body. The same principles are applied as with remedial and holistic massage where the focus is on improving health and wellbeing by alleviating pressure and tension which accumulate as a result of every day modern life. The pressure applied and the area(s) of the body treated will depend on whether you want to feel invigorated or totally relaxed, and how firm you prefer your massage.

Holistic Massage

More soothing, calming, gentler sessions, again tailormade to your needs according to pressure requirements, and with the overall aim of enjoying complete calm and relaxation for a while.

Pregnancy Massage

During pregnancy the body is undergoing many changes, and pregnancy massage has enormous benefits throughout for both mother to be and baby as you both prepare for the enormous changes ahead.  It emotionally and physiologically supports a woman and can help her prepare her body for birth:

  • Musculoskeletal System - Weight gain causes problems with posture and breathing, affecting nerves, muscles and joints, and muscles surrounding the hips can become sore and tender as they expand.  Massage helps ease muscular tension in the shoulders, and especially the lower back pain during this time.

Circulatory System - The volume of blood in the body almost doubles, and it is this which can lead to swollen feet and ankles.  During later stages of pregnancy the blood can be more prone to clotting. Massage speeds up the circulation therefore increasing oxygen and nutrients to the baby and helping remove waste through the lymphatic system. This in turn helps eliminate fatigue in you, giving you more energy.

Respiratory System - The ribcage contracts as the foetus grows and the uterus enlarges. As the amount of space occupied by the lungs is decreased, this can lead to shortness of breath. The relaxing effects of massage cause deeper breathing and can help respiratory problems such as asthma.

Digestive System - Constipation is common, and along with a healthy balanced diet, gentle massage of the abdomen area can help relieve this.

Hormones – Massage encourages the release of oxytocin, a pain reducing hormone providing vital relief of pain during labour and birth.

Varicose Veins – Massage helps to avoid varicose veins from developing.

Stress – Pregnancy massage helps to reduce emotional stress and anxiety, and creates a vital feeling of well being.

Deep Relaxation – It is reported that women who sleep well during the last month of pregnancy have shorter labours, and pregnancy massage induces deep relaxation, helping with peaceful sleep.

Pregnancy massage is safe to undertake after 16 weeks (some GPs will allow after 12 weeks but treatment can only take place with their approval in writing). As well as the usual contra-indications to massage, specific conditions related to pregnancy must be considered and may affect treatments undertaken.  These will be discussed at the time of booking or making an enquiry.
